Proton VPN is a service provided by Proton AG, an employee-owned company based in Switzerland. Proton was founded in 2014 by a team of scientists who met at CERN (the European Center for Nuclear Research) and created Proton Mail, the world’s largest encrypted email service.

Proton employees hold the vast majority of shares in the company. The remaining shares are held by the Fondation Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique (FONGIT), a non-profit foundation established for the public good, with a small number of shares held by Proton users. Proton’s global headquarters and legal domicile is in Geneva, Switzerland.
